Projects / St. Nicholas School, Hampshire

The brief was to build a new school hall facility to replace the existing hall which was used for school assemblies, Drama Productions and Music/Choral Productions which are an important part of the school’s curriculum. This facility was to have a minimum capacity of 330 seats and to be in the round.

The finished building contains an orchestra pit, 1 Drama classroom which can be subdivided into 2 classrooms behind the stage both having direct access onto the stage, new senior classroom at 1st floor, lift access to 1st floor with new link to existing 1st floor classrooms which previously were not accessible by disabled students.

The Architects solution was to have fixed tiered seating at ground floor level along with tiered seating at mezzanine level.  The building has its own glass feature entrance to create direct access from outside on performance nights. The biggest challenge was to create the correct balance of acoustics for music and the spoken word both of which have different levels of verbetion.  This was achieved by acoustic panels along with the correct selection of materials for the seats and floor coverings.

The Performing Arts building has state of the art theatre lighting, sound control box so the students of the school can have hands on experience of using this type of equipment for their GCSE’s.
